Del Valle ISD is moving forward with using the Secured Mobility Authorized Ridership Technology (SMART) tag system for all students who ride the bus to and from school.
The system will allow our bus drivers to benefit through improved safety and automation of tasks, better enabling them to focus on the safe transport of students. Each of our buses is outfitted with a tablet equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader, mobile connectivity, and GPS. Specifically, the SMART tag system wireless transmits information to our transportation staff to include the location of each bus, the names of students on board each bus, notification of an approaching bus, and the ability to view a student’s ridership activity.
How it Works
Each student will be issued a SMART tag™ card. They will scan this card on a card reader when they get on the bus and when they get off. SMART tag™ will authorize the student, or alert the driver through the onboard tablet computer if:
- A student attempts to get on a bus that does not go to their school
- A student attempts to get off at a stop that is not their assigned stop
Please note, once the program is implemented at your child’s campus, a SMART tag ID badge is required each time your child enters and exits the bus. However, rest assured, our drivers will not deny any student transportation services if they do not have their badge present at boarding time.
The SMART tag system also offers parents a bus tracking feature through a secure Parent Portal. Parents can register to receive ‘SMART Alert’ text messages notifying them their child is 10-15 minutes from his/her bus stop. The ‘SMART Alert’ will also notify parents in the event of a bus delay or interruption in service due to a mechanical issue, traffic, inclement weather or crash. The portal may be accessed from any device with a web browser. *Please be patient while we work through the process to implement SMART tag and setup Parent Portal*
